Answer Engine Optimisation for Singapore SMEs: Winning When AI Answers First

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of making your business the source an AI answer draws from and names, rather than the tenth blue link nobody scrolls to. If your website traffic has dropped this year while your Google rankings barely moved, this is almost certainly why: the click stopped happening, not the ranking. The fix for a Singapore SME is not more blog volume. It is three things — rewrite your commercially important pages so they answer a specific question in the first 60 words, make your business entity consistent and machine-readable across the web, and change what you measure from clicks to citations and enquiry quality.

Why are your clicks falling while your rankings stay the same?

Open Google Search Console and compare the last 6 months against the same period in 2025. The pattern most SME owners see is impressions flat or up, clicks down 20 to 40 percent, and average position roughly unchanged. That is the signature of AI Overviews. Google now generates an answer above the organic results for a large share of informational queries, often summarising content from three or four sources. The user reads the summary and leaves. Meanwhile a growing slice of your prospects never touch Google at all — they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot, get one answer with a handful of links, and act on it.

The commercial consequence is uneven. Pages answering how-to and what-is questions bleed the most. Pages where someone wants a vendor, a price, a location or a booking still convert, because an AI summary cannot complete that transaction for them. Knowing which of your pages sit in which bucket is the whole starting point.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO optimises for a position in a list. AEO optimises for being quoted. A search engine ranks pages; an answer engine extracts claims, synthesises them, and decides which sources are credible enough to name. That changes what good content looks like.

Ranking content often buries the answer — a 300-word introduction, then the point. Extractable content states the answer immediately, in a complete self-contained sentence, then supports it. It uses specific numbers, dates and named entities instead of vague reassurance. It prefers short labelled sections over one long argument, because a model lifts sections, not whole essays. And it is verifiable: an AI system will favour a page that cites CPF Board, IRAS or MOM over one that asserts the same thing with no source.

Practically, SEO and AEO are not in conflict. The same structure that gets you quoted also performs well in traditional results. You are not rebuilding your site. You are changing how each page opens.

Which pages should a 10-person SME rewrite first?

Do not start at the top of your sitemap. Start with the pages that earn money, in this order.

One, your service pages for bottom-funnel queries. Someone searching for an air-conditioning servicing contractor in Jurong or a payroll provider for a 12-person company is close to buying. Make sure each service has its own page, naming the service, the area served, the typical price range in SGD and who it is for. Price ranges feel exposing; they are also the single most citable thing on your site.

Two, your top five existing organic pages that lost clicks. Rewrite the opening so the first paragraph answers the headline question outright. Add a short FAQ block with real questions your sales team actually gets asked.

Three, your about and contact pages. These are the entity pages. They need your full registered name, UEN, physical Singapore address, phone number, operating hours and GST registration status written as text — not baked into an image or a PDF.

Three to five pages done properly beats twenty pages of thin content, which AI systems discount anyway.

How do you make your business machine-readable?

Answer engines need to be confident about who you are before they will name you. Four moves cover most of it.

Add structured data — Organization or LocalBusiness schema on your homepage, Service schema on service pages, and FAQPage schema where you have genuine FAQs. Most CMS platforms do this through a plugin; it is a one-afternoon job, not a project.

Make your name, address and phone number identical everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, LinkedIn, industry directories, ACRA records. Inconsistency is the most common reason a small business gets skipped.

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, including services, hours and recent photos. For local intent queries this remains the highest-leverage asset an SME owns, and it feeds AI local answers directly.

Check that your site is actually crawlable. Content rendered only by JavaScript, gated behind a form, or living inside a PDF is effectively invisible. Ensure your robots.txt is not blocking the AI crawlers you want citing you — and that it is blocking the ones you do not.

How do you measure whether AEO is working?

Clicks alone will now mislead you, because a reduced click count can accompany better-qualified enquiries. Track four things instead.

First, referral traffic from AI sources in your analytics — filter for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. The volume is small but the conversion rate is typically far higher than generic organic.

Second, the impressions-to-clicks gap in Search Console per page, which tells you where an AI answer is intercepting you.

Third, run your ten most important queries through ChatGPT and Google once a month and record whether you are mentioned, and what the AI says about you. Wrong facts in that answer are a problem you can fix at the source.

Fourth, ask every new enquiry how they found you, and write it down. Within a quarter you will have better attribution data than any dashboard gives you.

When is AEO not worth the effort?

If your business runs almost entirely on referrals, repeat customers and a WhatsApp list, your website is a credibility check rather than a channel — spend two days on the entity basics and schema, then stop. Similarly, if your buyers are three procurement managers at MNCs who already know you, AEO will not move anything. AEO earns its keep where strangers find you by searching. Be honest about whether that describes your pipeline before committing budget, and remember that an agency charging a monthly retainer for AEO is largely doing work that is front-loaded, not continuous.

Frequently asked questions

Does AEO replace SEO for a small business?
No. It extends it. Technical health, crawlability, page speed and relevant content still determine whether you are eligible to be cited at all. AEO changes how you structure and open each page, and what you measure — it does not make existing SEO fundamentals obsolete.

How long before we see results from AEO work?
Expect 4 to 12 weeks for AI systems to re-crawl and reflect changes, with entity and schema fixes showing up faster than content rewrites. Google Business Profile improvements can affect local answers within days.

Should we block AI crawlers to protect our content?
Only if your content itself is the product you sell, such as paid research or courseware. For a service business, blocking AI crawlers removes you from the answers your prospects are now reading. The content was a marketing asset, not inventory — treat it that way.
